HOW IT'S MADE: BEHIND THE SAFARI COLLECTION. Whole Hide, Buckled And Plaited Saddle Leather

This collection is a deeply personal one, pulling from generations of experiences across Africa. Taking this inspiration back to various workshops in and around Cape Town to bring the pieces alive has allowed us to work with some of the most talented craftspeople across the south of the continent. And more, has allowed us to use a modern interpretation of some of the most spectacular traditional crafts that have been honed by time through generations of makers. This week we look at the immensely versatile material that is leather.

For centuries, Leather has long been one of the most versatile materials across Africa (globally, it was one of the first ‘textiles’). It’s supple and resistant nature has seen it used from water skins, to musical instruments to shelters, shields and saddlery. Its use in furniture, although more recent, is ever popular. It is flexible, malleable and comfortable.

From the old folding Safari camp chairs and beds to plaited and woven settler sofa’s and benches or solid hide traveling and storage trunks its uses have been miriad. We have bought together a host of ‘Safari’ style techniques in our pieces. We use veg tanned double butt leather which is a more refined, natural leather - longer lasting and more versatile.
